Album cover size guide for Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud

Compare current platform requirements, choose one reliable square master, and prepare the final file without stretching or guesswork. Then use the Vismuse AI agent to refine the crop, title, and spacing in chat instead of rebuilding the cover in an editor.

The safest album cover size for Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud is a 4000 × 4000 pixel square master in sRGB. It meets the strictest current pixel minimum among the three, but you may still need a smaller compressed copy for an upload destination.

Use one release-ready master:

  • Perfect squareBuild the cover at a 1:1 aspect ratio from the start.
  • 4000 × 4000 masterThis meets Apple Music’s current minimum and fits Spotify’s range.
  • sRGB colorUse sRGB and avoid submitting a CMYK print file.
  • Readable thumbnailCheck the subject and title again at a much smaller size.

Why not 3000 × 3000? It remains common distributor advice, but Apple Music’s current artist guidance specifies at least 4000 × 4000 pixels.

Album cover dimensions by platform

Upload rules change, and distributors may add stricter checks. Confirm the destination you actually submit through before release day.

Set the master specification

Plan for one high-resolution 1:1 master in sRGB. After downloading it, keep the master unchanged and export a separate copy for each destination.

2

Generate at 1:1 instead of cropping later

Choose the 1:1 aspect ratio before generating in Vismuse. If 4K is available on your plan, select it, then confirm that the downloaded file is at least 4000 × 4000 pixels.

Starting square protects the subject, title, and edge details. Converting a portrait or landscape design at the end often cuts off the strongest part of the composition.

3

Check the artwork at full size and thumbnail size

At full size, inspect faces, hands, edges, gradients, and every letter. Then view the cover at streaming-thumbnail size. The main subject and release title should remain easy to recognize.

Do not solve a weak thumbnail by upscaling a small file. Increase contrast, simplify the background, or regenerate at a higher resolution instead.

4

Revise the same cover in chat

If the square crop feels crowded, continue from the current result. Ask the Vismuse AI agent to create more room, move the title, or reduce background detail while preserving everything else where possible.

Make one focused request at a time and proofread after every text edit. AI-generated lettering can still change a character, spacing detail, or punctuation mark.

5

Verify the downloaded file before submission

Check the downloaded file’s properties and confirm its pixel dimensions, format, color space, and file size. Vismuse can generate and refine the cover, but each platform or distributor decides whether the file passes validation.

If you are uploading directly to SoundCloud and the master is over 2 MB, export or compress a separate JPG or PNG copy. Keep the high-resolution master for distribution and future use.

Refine the square cover through conversation

These follow-up prompts work on the current cover. They tell the agent what to change and what to keep, so you can refine the composition without selecting layers or drawing masks.

Common album cover rejection risks

ProblemWhat to do
The file is not perfectly squareReturn to a 1:1 version instead of stretching the image or adding uneven borders.
The artwork is too smallRegenerate or export from a higher-resolution source. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution preview.
The title does not match the metadataCorrect every word, version label, featured artist, space, and punctuation mark before submission.
Text or faces are cut offMove important content away from the edge and keep a clean safe margin around the composition.
The cover contains promotional textRemove URLs, social handles, prices, release dates, QR codes, and calls such as “Out Now.”
The file exceeds SoundCloud’s direct-upload limitCreate a compressed JPG or PNG copy under 2 MB while keeping the high-resolution master.

Album cover size checklist

  • The canvas is a perfect 1:1 square
  • The pixel dimensions meet the exact upload destination
  • The image uses sRGB rather than a CMYK print profile
  • The artist name and release title match the metadata
  • The title and subject remain clear at thumbnail size
  • No face, word, logo, or important detail is cut off
  • The file size stays within the upload limit

Album cover size FAQ

What album cover size works for Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud?

Keep a 4000 × 4000 pixel square master in sRGB. This meets Apple Music’s current minimum and fits within Spotify’s accepted range. Export a smaller compressed copy only when an upload destination sets a file-size limit.

Is 3000 × 3000 pixels enough for album cover art?

It is enough for Spotify and SoundCloud distribution, but Apple Music’s current artist guidance asks for at least 4000 × 4000 pixels. A 4000 × 4000 master is therefore the safer choice across all three.

What is the Spotify album cover size?

Spotify currently accepts square cover art between 640 × 640 and 10,000 × 10,000 pixels. It accepts TIFF, PNG, or JPG and also asks for lossless encoding, the highest resolution available, a 1:1 aspect ratio, and sRGB at 24 bits per pixel.

What size is Apple Music cover art?

Apple Music currently requires a perfect square at least 4000 × 4000 pixels in JPG, PNG, or GIF format. The artwork should be sharp and any visible artist or title information should match the release metadata.

Should SoundCloud artwork be 800 × 800 or 3000 × 3000?

For artwork uploaded directly to a SoundCloud track, at least 800 × 800 pixels is recommended and the file can be up to 2 MB. For digital distribution through SoundCloud, the separate distribution guidance requires at least 3000 × 3000 pixels at 300 dpi.

Does DPI matter for digital album covers?

Pixel dimensions are the clearest requirement on Spotify and Apple Music’s published pages. SoundCloud’s digital distribution guidance also specifies 300 dpi. Follow the exact distributor form you are submitting through, especially if it is stricter than the streaming platform.

Can I resize an existing album cover with Vismuse?

You can ask the Vismuse AI agent to reframe an existing cover as a 1:1 square while preserving the subject, title, and visual style where possible. Use the 1:1 and 4K controls when creating the new result, then confirm that the downloaded file is at least 4000 × 4000 pixels and within the destination’s file-size limit.
